Yesterday I was a guest speaker in Victor Harbor at the Crown Hotel talking about my 20 year journey as a landscape photographer to several camera clubs. I was also on the judging panel of the yearly photo competition. I had a great day and enjoyed sharing a bit of my story to possibly help and motivate others. It’s been a wild ride with tears and tantrums highs and lows along the way. I got very emotional at one point which took me by surprise but I quickly realized it was about the reflection and how hard I had worked to get here…the journey…the recall of all the moments good and bad. They flooded me all at once as we watched one of my favourite drone video footage up on screen that I shared with everyone taken many years ago now in the outback of South Australia.
I touched on several points that were extremely important to me. One in particular was about being a woman travelling solo and another was building a business around that and the challenges especially in the early years as I was becoming recognized and winning awards regularly. I have always been underestimated through my life and often not taken seriously dismissed or made to feel like my work was not worthy. I didn’t let that stop me and used it to motivate and push myself to be the successful photographer I am today. It was not easy for me to deal with negative comments and I still struggle with that now. I was never thick skinned enough but I was smart enough to back myself. Passionate enough to keep photographing and driven enough to strive to be the best I could be.
I just want to say thank you to all of you for making me feel welcome and for allowing me to be seen. To all the people that came up to me to say they enjoyed my talk my honesty and how raw and real I was. You will never understand how much this means to me. It has put a pep back in my step.
Thank you so much. With new friends and new possibilities and new creative tools and training now available on my website I look forward to the next chapter of Julie Fletcher Photography.

Know your camera well, free your creativity. Knowing where and how to adjust your camera settings is one of the most valuable skills a photographer can have. Out in the field, conditions rarely stay the same for long—light shifts, clouds roll in, wildlife moves, or the scene unfolds faster than you expect. If you have […]
The Red Centre photography workshop was a great success, with four clients joining me on an unforgettable journey through one of Australia’s most striking landscapes. Across eight days, we explored a variety of locations, from giant River Red Gums to the dramatic rock formations at sunrise to the vast desert skies after sunset. A diverse […]
Spending three months photographing Cradle Mountain in winter sounds like the dream—snow-capped peaks, frosty mornings, mist rolling over alpine lakes. But behind those peaceful, moody images lies a whole lot of planning, persistence, and cold fingers. This season I committed to chasing winter across Tasmania’s highlands, basing myself around the iconic Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair […]

Hi Julie, Thank you so much for the chance to attend your photography workshop at Marree in September. For me this was a marvellous opportunity to improve my photography skills and visit a part of Australia I have always wanted to see (and will be back to visit again!). Over the 3 days I captured some pretty impressive images. Travelling to Marree on the edge of the outback is a lot easier than it once was. A 2 day drive from Melbourne was very simple. Especially if you compare it to the 5 days it used to take to just go from Marree to Birdsville. The biggest challenge is limiting the photo stops at all the interesting things you see along the way. Even more so on the return journey, with all the new ideas and techniques to practice. What an amazing location you have for these workshops. Marree put on a show for us every morning and night. Staying at the Marree roadhouse was wonderful, simple hearty food and glorious hot showers made the visit all the more pleasant. How nice are the people! They are friendly, funny and very interesting. Lyall is definitely one of the Australian outback treasures, but you know that already J I really enjoyed the many interesting landscape locations we worked at in and around Marree. The clever techniques you taught us with creative lighting have given me a set of tools to use for producing some really interesting images. It really struck home to me how valuable it is to have someone like you teach me techniques that have taken you years of trial and error to develop. Techniques that I could learn and apply in the field in a very short timeframe. I am even now thinking of ways to test the limits further using your techniques. The class room sessions provided a great interactive environment, taking on Photoshop with my limited experience of this particular software meant my learning curve was steep. I appreciated the small group size as this allowed me to get the answers to the questions I needed while keeping us all moving along at the same pace. The small group also made it easy to share ideas and learn from each other’s experiences along the way. Thank you again for everything you taught me, I highly recommend that anyone even thinking of doing one of your workshops should jump at the opportunity.

If you want to be inspired, educated and invigorated by a professional photographer Julie Fletcher is the women you need to know. The betterment of our photography is her first priority and her excellent people skills enables her to recognise our strengths and weaknesses. We have just returned from our second value for money workshop in Marree fired up and totally enthused. I made great new likeminded friends and of course enjoyed the epitome of outback hospitality with Lyall’s huge personality, generous nature and amazing catering skills. Love the new face book group and really really love that you have written the process for processing the image above it for us to review as it will help no end and save my sanity when I get to have a play. I can't stop thinking about the gear you have selflessly shared with us. I just need to have a crack now. Thanks again
