Back to Tasmania for winter

Excited to Embrace the Chill Again

As the air grows crisp and the days shorten, I’m filled with a familiar excitement—I’m heading back to Tasmania for winter for the first time. It’s a season that transforms the landscape into something truly magical. Snow-capped mountains, frost-laced forests, and quiet, misty mornings create a wonderland that never fails to stir the soul—and challenge the photographer.

Tasmania in winter is a wild, beautiful, and at times unpredictable place. That’s part of what makes it so rewarding. From the towering peaks of Cradle Mountain dusted in snow to the icy reflections of Dove Lake, there’s a drama to the scenery that is unlike any other time of year. Each step on the walking trails reveals new compositions, hidden scenes, and the subtle magic of winter light. But it’s precisely these ever-changing conditions that keep me coming back. They push me creatively and technically, offering a fresh perspective even on familiar locations.

For those who love winter walking, Tasmania offers countless trails that wind through snow-covered valleys, alpine meadows, and ancient forests. There’s a deep sense of quiet and solitude here in winter—perfect for photographers who thrive on capturing moody, atmospheric scenes. And let’s not forget the wildlife—echidnas, wombats, and wallabies continue their routines, unfazed by the chill, adding life and story to the frozen landscape.

The challenges of winter photography—keeping gear working in the cold, staying dry, managing light in low-sun conditions—are real, but they’re part of the adventure. And the rewards? They’re breathtaking. Standing on a frosty ridge at sunrise, watching golden light spill across snow-capped mountains, is a moment that stays with you long after the season ends.

I’ll be sharing my winter journey through Tasmania over the coming weeks—photos, stories, and maybe even a few behind-the-scenes glimpses into what it’s like to chase snow scenes in some of the most remote and beautiful corners of the island.

If you’ve been thinking of exploring Tasmania in winter, now is the time. It’s challenging, yes—but it’s also wildly inspiring. And for those of us who love snow scenes, walking trails, and the raw beauty of nature, it’s a season that delivers on every level.

Lets go!!
