West MacDonnell Ranges Photography Adventure

Dated: 19 March 2025

After a hearty breakfast in Alice Springs, we embark on a full-day photography journey through the stunning West MacDonnell Ranges, home to some of the most breathtaking landscapes in Central Australia.

First Stop – Standley Chasm
Our first destination is Standley Chasm, a dramatic rock formation with towering red cliffs. Arriving mid-morning, we’ll capture the play of light and shadows as the sun illuminates the chasm’s sheer rock walls—an incredible opportunity for mastering contrast and composition.

Ellery Creek Big Hole – Lunch Stop
Next, we head to Ellery Creek Big Hole, a picturesque waterhole surrounded by rugged cliffs and shady gum trees. Here, we take a break for lunch, offering time to relax, enjoy the peaceful surroundings, and capture reflections on the still water.

Ormiston Gorge – Photography Walk
In the afternoon, we arrive at Ormiston Gorge, one of the most spectacular locations in the West MacDonnell Ranges. A scenic walk through the gorge provides opportunities to photograph towering rock walls, deep ochre colors, and waterholes, perfect for refining your composition and storytelling skills.

Sunset at Mount Sonder Lookout
As the day winds down, we make our way to Mount Sonder Lookout, a breathtaking vantage point to capture the golden hues of the outback at sunset. With panoramic views over the MacDonnell Ranges, this is a prime
location to practice long exposure techniques, silhouette photography, and capturing vast landscapes in changing light.

After the sun sets over the outback, we return to Alice Springs for a late dinner, where we can relax, share our best shots of the day, and prepare for the final leg of our Red Centre adventure.

From dramatic gorges to sweeping mountain vistas, Day 5 offers an unforgettable exploration of the West MacDonnell Ranges—one of Australia’s most photogenic landscapes!
