A Different Kind of Red Centre Trip.

August saw me head back to the Red Centre for another photography trip, but this one turned out a little differently to the usual workshop.

I had just one person along for the trip.

At first, I wasn’t quite sure how it would work, but it actually turned out to be a really enjoyable way to experience the Red Centre. Rather than working to a set group itinerary, we could be much more flexible and make decisions based on the conditions, the light and, most importantly, what my client wanted to photograph.

One of the great things about travelling with just one person is that the whole trip can be moulded around them. If we found something interesting, we could stay longer. If the light wasn’t doing what we hoped, we could change plans. And there was plenty of time to explore different compositions without having to keep a group moving.

We still visited many of my favourite locations around the Red Centre, but the experience felt much more relaxed and personal. There was also plenty of time for discussing photography, looking at compositions, talking through camera settings and sharing ideas as we went.

It also made me think about another option for future trips.

I’ve always run my Red Centre workshops as small-group experiences, but I really like the idea of offering an occasional one-on-one Red Centre photography trip.

It could be a more budget-friendly option than a traditional private tour, while still giving someone the benefits of having the trip almost entirely built around them. Rather than paying for a large private tour, it would be a simple, more affordable way to spend several days photographing the Red Centre with me and have plenty of individual tuition along the way.

And because there is only one person, it can be incredibly flexible.

Maybe you want to concentrate on improving your compositions or finding less obvious compositions, or simply want someone who knows the area to take you to some great locations and help you get the most from them.

There is also something I really enjoy about these smaller trips. You get to know the person you are photographing with, and I can spend much more time understanding what they are trying to achieve with their photography.

So, although this trip wasn’t something I had originally planned as a new type of tour, it has definitely given me something to think about.

I could see myself offering a limited number of these one-on-one Red Centre trips in the future.

It would still have the things I love about my workshops – great locations, plenty of photography, a bit of adventure and lots of time to work on your photography – just in a much more personal format.

Sometimes the smaller trips can turn out to be the most rewarding ones. Get in touch if your interested in joining me for this option to discuss it further.
